Devendra Banhart – What Will We Be (2009)

Fans of Banhart's outré tendencies might be surprised that this is also his first major-label disc; after all, he doesn't really seem like the compromising sort. Yet, working alongside producer Paul Butler (from the U.K.'s A Band of Bees), Banhart actually flourishes with a little direction: In the catchy campfire singalongs "Angelika" and "Goin' Back to the Place," his appealing eccentricity gains potency when it's packed into more compact forms, while "Baby" and "16th & Valencia" shimmer with a newfound professionalism. What Will We Be sags toward the end with a handful of snoozy acoustic shuffles and a wack-ass impersonation of the Doors. But mostly, it clicks. Maybe wild boars can be broken.

The Flaming Lips – Doing The Dark Side Of The Moon [2009]

The Flaming Lips will release their version of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon digitally starting December 22nd. The Lips’ Dark Side will be an iTunes exclusive for one week until December 29th, at which point it’ll head over to the other digital retailers. As you probably guessed from the rerecording’s epically long title, both Henry Rollins and Peaches contribute “vocal assistance,” or those talking-head bits that served as segues between songs on the original TDSOTM.

Sting - If on a Winter’s Night (2009)

If on a Winter's Night presents an arc of songs that conjure the season of spirits, the eerie silences of the snow; days of solitude and reflection for some, a time of re-birth and celebration for many. With traditional music of the British Isles as their starting point, Sting and his guest musicians draw the listener in through a collection of songs, carols, and lullabies spanning the centuries - such as The Snow it Melts the Soonest (traditional Newcastle ballad), Soul Cake (traditional English "begging" song) Gabriel's Message (14th century carol), as well as two of Sting's own compositions - Lullaby for an Anxious Child and The Hounds of Winter. Also featured on the album is Hurdy Gurdy Man - a musical reworking and English translation (by Sting) of Der Leiermann from Schubert's classic winter song-cycle Winterreise. For this exploration of the themes and emotions of winter Sting is joined by friend and long time colleague, guitarist Dominic Miller - and an ensemble of three remarkable musicians from Northern England and Scotland: Kathryn Tickell (fiddle and Northumbrian pipes) Julian Sutton (melodian) and Mary MacMaster (metal string Scottish harp). Additional guest artists include Vincent Ségal (cello), Daniel Hope (violin), Chris Botti (trumpet), Ibrahim Maalouf (trumpet), Stile Antico (vocal ensemble), Cyro Baptista (percussion), Bijan Chemirani (percussion) and the Webb Sisters (vocals). Together they've created an album with a wonderful, warm, and unique ensemble sound - an acoustic meditation on winter.

Elizabeth Fraser [Cocteau Twins] - Moses (2009 EP)

The Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser was once described by a British critic as having the voice of God.

It seems like a long, long time since former Cocteau Twin Elizabeth Fraser made her presence felt as a solo artist, but with this new single it seems all that might be about to change. 'Moses' is something of an enigma - could this be a track from the yet-to-materialise solo album due a couple of years back, or is it an entirely fresh start? The track's soundscape is no less mysterious than its origins, setting swirling, archaic sounding choral samples amid dub rhythms and Eastern European accordion melodies while Fraser's voice sails across the mix in unearthly fashion in a language unbeknownst to this correspondent. Thighpaulsandra offer a sympathetic electronic reworking while Spaceland cast a gloomy, more organic production.

Sade - Soldier Of Love (2010 single)

The queen of smooth soul ,Sade is set to release her long awaited sixth studio album on Feb. 8, 2010 worldwide on Epic Records. Soldier Of Love is the first single from her album of the same name. Generally, it’s damn near perfection, she never disappoints!

It received very positive reviews, with an average of four to five stars of five. It was one of the most critically acclaimed albums of 2008.

Very nice album that you must have if you like indie rock, folk and easy-going sounds. This is also special edition, included with bonus songs.

Guided By Voices - Suitcase 3

Up We Go Now is the third in the Suitcase series of unreleased Robert Pollard / Guided By Voices tracks excavated from a suitcase of cassettes in his closet. Like the previous two volumes, Suitcase 3 includes about 100 songs on four compact discs in a box. Disc 4 is an acoustic jam session by Pollard, Tobin Sprout, and Greg Demos in 1994-1995 (the period between GBV classics Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes).

Depeche Mode - Fragile Tension / Hole to Feed

"Fragile Tension"/"Hole to Feed" is to be Depeche Mode's third single from their most recent studio album, Sounds of the Universe, their 48th UK single overall, and their third double A-side single, following "Blasphemous Rumours / Somebody" and "John the Revelator / Lilian". "Hole to Feed" is the second Depeche Mode single written by Dave Gahan along with co-writers Christian Eigner and Andrew Phillpott, succeeding the first being "Suffer Well", from their previous album Playing The Angel. Gahan told The Guardian that "Hole to Feed" is, "a very cynical song about wanting to fill a gaping hole but not knowing what to fill it with. About sometimes the idea of having a hole to feed all being a figment of my imagination when I'm actually fine." It was announced on their website on November 7, 2009, and is planned for release on December 7, 2009. Unlike the other two singles from the album, there are no plans to release a 7" vinyl edition at this time, and there will not be a limited edition CD ("LCD") either.

Norah Jones - The Fall (2009)

Jones' official website has stated that she "has taken a new direction on the The Fall, experimenting with different sounds and a new set of collaborators, including Jacquire King, a noted producer and engineer who has worked with Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, and Modest Mouse among others. Jones enlisted several songwriting collaborators, including Ryan Adams and Okkervil River’s Will Sheff, as well as her frequent partner Jesse Harris. King also helped Jones put together a new group of musicians to perform on the album, including drummers Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.) and James Gadson (Bill Withers), keyboardist James Poyser (Erykah Badu, Al Green), and guitarists Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello), Smokey Hormel (Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer)", Lyle Workman, (Bourgois Tagg, film composer for Superbad), and Peter Atanasoff (Rickie Lee Jones, Tito and Tarantula). Jones has also revealed the cover artwork for the album, which features a portrait by photographer Autumn de Wilde.[11]

Kasabian - The West Rider Pauper Lunatic Asylum (2009)

"Vlad the Impaler" was made available as a free download from the official website from 31st March to 3rd April 2009. The first proper, physical release from the album was "Fire", which was released on the 1st of June.

Sergio Pizzorno has called the 52-minute album "the soundtrack to an imaginary movie."

Opening with the track "Underdog", the album also includes a duet, on the track "West Ryder Silver Bullet", with the actress Rosario Dawson.

The album cover depicts the band "getting dressed up for a party at the asylum, looking in the mirror at the costumes". Inspiration for such cover originated from the artwork of Amon Düül II's album Made In Germany.

The album entered the UK Album Chart at #1, giving the band their second #1 album. It remained at the top of the charts for several weeks, only knocked off by the sharp increase in sales of Michael Jackson albums following his death.

The album was nominated for the 2009 Mercury Prize. In October 2009 it was voted the best album of the year by Q Magazine.

The Cranberries - Bury The Hatchet

Bury the Hatchet was the fourth album by The Cranberries, released in 1999. All lyrics by Dolores O'Riordan, and all music by Noel Hogan and Dolores O'Riordan except tracks 3, 8, 10 and 13 by Dolores O'Riordan. In the US, the album has sold 377,000 copies as of April 2007.

It's the first album released by the band after their (first) hiatus which started back in 1996. Dolores had taken that time to heal from stress-induced diseases, and also had her first child, Taylor, during this period. This last fact reflected on some of the tracks in the album, mainly on "Animal Instinct" and "You and Me".

The sound of the band had matured. It wasn't the melancholic and nostalgic feel of their first two albums, and it steered far apart of the anger shown in To the Faithful Departed. The themes of the songs vary, from maternity and children, to divorce and child abuse.

"Promises", the first single, talked about divorce, a theme that was bugging Dolores, who had time to rest in her home country, Ireland. She said she wrote it when divorce was becoming particularly popular there. She was of course fearful for her own marriage, not because she had any troubles with her husband Don, but because now she had to have something else in mind: her son.

New Album: Tori Amos - Midwinter Graces (2009)

Tori's last album, Abnormally Attracted to Sin, was only released in May of this year, so another album in 2009 proves that Tori is only becoming more prodigious as she gets older. Midwinter Graces will be what the Americans call a 'holiday album', i.e. full of old Christmas tunes no one wants to hear their favourite artist singing.

Tori however has always completely reinterpreted the songs she chooses to cover (Strange Little Girls is a case in point) and along with Little Drummer Boy and Have Yourself A Merry Christmas, she is no stranger to the seasonal song. What is interesting to me is that it will feature new compositions - 'Pink and Glitter' and 'Our New Year', but also the press release intimates that this album would be a follow-up to Abnormally Attracted to Sin, which implies to me there may be some thematic overlap here.

Anyway, I say two albums from Tori Amos makes 2009 a bumper year, and I look forward to that first glass of mulled wine and a mince pie to truly enjoy it.

Tegan and Sara - Sainthood (2009)

Tegan and Sara's sixth studio album - Sainthood - addresses secular themes of devotion, delusion, and exemplary behavior in the pursuit of love andrelationships. Inspired by emotional longing and the quiet actions we hope may be noticed by the objects of our affection, Sainthood is about obsession with romantic ideals.

In the service of relationships we practice being perfect. We practice our sainthood in the hope that we will be rewarded with adoration. As we are driven to become anything for someone else, we sometimes become martyrs for our cause.

Love, like faith, can never be held in an individual's hands. But the story of a great love affair - especially one that is unrequited or has ended too soon - can be woven like scripture or a bedtime story. And so the themes of Sainthood are tied together by this simple title, borrowed, with great respect, from the lyrics of the Leonard Cohen song 'Came So Far For Beauty.'

Keane - Hopes And Fears (2009) (Deluxe Edition)

Keane pleased to announce the full international release of a 2CD Deluxe Edition of Keane's first album, Hopes And Fears, on 9th November 2009. The sleevenotes have been penned by long-time supporter Steve Lamacq. The 37-track Deluxe Edition is available to pre-order now from the Keane official store, for £14 (around $22 / €15).

We also have bundles containing the CD and a new T-shirt featuring the classic CP70 print. Plus, there is a very limited edition deluxe bundle, featuring the album, the T-shirt and a Hopes And Fears CP70 art print, signed by the band. Only 150 of these prints were made.

TLC - Fanmail (1999)

Rumors of TLC's impending breakup were especially worrying in light of this excellent disc, which was even more consistent in its way than 1994's CrazySexyCool. Great singing and the usual huge hooks--not to mention the smarts of songs such as "Unpretty" and "I'm Good at Being Bad"--made Fanmail one of R&B's most striking releases of the year

Tokio Hotel - Humanoid

What did Bill Kaulitz do with his charisma? With his over-the-top goth-pop vocals — and even more baroque hairspray-and-mascara styling — the 20-year-old singer has made this German band one of Europe’s most popular and irresistible groups. But on Humanoid, he sounds strangely reduced. In part, it’s a question of hooks: With the exception of “Hey You” and “World Behind My Wall,” the album is melodically anemic and strangely low-key. Subtle is not a mode that suits Kaulitz — just check the coiffure.

Sugababes - Get Sexy

“Get Sexy” is the name of a 2009 single performed by English girl group Sugababes , written by Phillip Lawrence, Ari Levine, Bruno Mars and produced by American production outfit the Smeezingtons (comprised of Lawrence and Mars) for the band’s seventh studio album, Sweet 7 (see 2009 in music). It features an interpolation of Right Said Fred’s “I’m Too Sexy”, composed by Christopher Fairbrass, Richard Fairbrass, and Robert Manzoli.

The song was the album’s opening track, and was released as its lead single at the end of August 2009. It is also the last single from the group to feature Keisha Buchanan after it was announced in September 2009 that she was no longer part of the group and will not be featured on the album.

Duran Duran - Rio (Remastered Collectors Edition 2CD) (2009)

'Guilty pleasure'? Pah! What's to feel abashed about when you're listening to an album that contains 'Hungry Like The Wolf', 'Save A Prayer' and the glacial, engimatic 'Chauffeur'? Still polarising opinion 25+ years after its initial release, and regarded as either the pinnacle or nadir but always the epitome of 80's pop, this remains the definitive example of Duran's curious sci-fi rock/funk/synthpop approach.

Back for 2009, and sounding brighter & punchier than ever in this new remaster. The two disc edition contains the original British version, the alternative, smoother mixes demanded for the U.S. release, a number of demos & b-sides plus all the fantastic 12" 'Night Versions'.

Killing Joke - The Peel Sessions 1979-1981 (2008)

I loved this band. However they turned to a strange metal music band after a while.

info:
A dream release for the Killing Joke faithful, this 2008 compilation collects the first four sessions the band did for the legendary BBC Radio DJ John Peel plus a bonus session recorded for Richard Skinner's program. The years covered are 1979 to 1981, so this isn't the usual career-spanning Peel comp, but it does follow the band as they evolve from a tribal post-punk unit that could have been signed to the esoteric Factory to an apocalyptic metal group that often landed in the pages of metal mag Kerrang!. Raw versions of the big, important numbers from the time -- "Wardance," "Complication," "The Fall of Because," and "Tension" -- are all here to illustrate the change. These under-produced alternatives either equal or better their official album counterparts but what's revelatory are the rare numbers like "Malicious Boogie" where the band play cowbell-driven, no wave funk as if they were Medium Medium or Liquid Liquid. Liner notes from Alex Paterson, who was a Killing Joke roadie before he was the Orb, speak to these experimental years with stories of guitarist Geordie's Wall of Sound and bassist Youth playing the "Rapper's Delight" 12" repeatedly. While it's a sliver of the longstanding band's history, anyone with a taste for their early years will be thrilled by this thorough, well-presented set.

The Raveonettes - In & Out of Control

The Raveonettes have always hated repeating themselves, and so they set the bar really high for In And Out Of Control . It s a strange mixture of modern and old, dark and happy. It s about rape, violence, lost love, suicide, not caring about what other people think of you and most importantly being mad and angelic!

Elastica - Stutter E.P. (1995)

Elastica released their first single was "Stutter" in 1993, which benefited from the promotional efforts of BBC Radio 1 DJ and Deceptive Records label boss Steve Lamacq who had discovered the band earlier in the year. In 1994, Elastica released two UK Top 20 singles, "Line Up" and "Connection", and performed on numerous radio shows. In addition Frischmann's relationship with Blur's Damon Albarn made tabloid headlines, thus creating further buzz about the band.

Richard Hawley - Truelove’s Gutter

The sixth Richard Hawley record "Truelove's Gutter" is darker than any previous records. The first single ""For Your Lover Give Some Time" and "Open Up Your Door" got my first attention to listen whole record. It's not as good as Coles Corner (2005), however Richard Hawley acclaims good reviews with this album.

Zoot Woman - Things Are What They Used To Be

ZOOT WOMAN present their third album. 'Things Are What They Used To Be' has by no means strayed from the dark and atmospheric, hooky and melodic road, but what we now hear is a strikingly upfront, passionate, and mature development.

The euphoric title track emphasises the want to return to how things once were in another state of mind, time and place.

While this album takes you on a journey, sometimes introspective and often drenched in desire, each track is unique. From the pulsing hook line of 'We Won’t Break', feeding an addiction to emotional melody in 'Lonely By Your Side' and 'More Than Ever', then to be shaken up by the pounding stadium electro of 'Witness'.

ZOOT WOMAN brings with this new album a sound and collection of songs so fresh that still carries the essence of what we know and love.....

Nelly Furtado - Manos Al Aire Full HQ

Lyrics:

Tú, que pierdes el control
Hablando en alta voz
Hieres mi corazón
Yo, tratando de escuchar
No me puedo explicar
Qué extraña sensación.

Tú no me quieres entender
Y me mandas a callar diciéndome
No me debo sorprender
Porque así es la realidad
De nuestro amor

[CHORUS]
Y yo
No tengo armas para enfrentarte
Pongo mis manos, manos al aire
Sólo me importa amarte
En cuerpo y alma como era ayer

Tú que perdiste el control
Te dejaste llevar
Por la inseguridad
Yo que te he visto crecer
Me puedo imaginar
Que todo cambiará

Hoy aunque todo siga igual
Y me mandes a callar diciéndome
Que tienes que dominar
O será el final
Y yo no puedo así

[CHORUS]
Y yo
No tengo armas para enfrentarte
Pongo mis manos, manos al aire
Sólo me importa amarte
En cuerpo y alma como era ayer
