Devendra Banhart – What Will We Be (2009)

Fans of Banhart's outré tendencies might be surprised that this is also his first major-label disc; after all, he doesn't really seem like the compromising sort. Yet, working alongside producer Paul Butler (from the U.K.'s A Band of Bees), Banhart actually flourishes with a little direction: In the catchy campfire singalongs "Angelika" and "Goin' Back to the Place," his appealing eccentricity gains potency when it's packed into more compact forms, while "Baby" and "16th & Valencia" shimmer with a newfound professionalism. What Will We Be sags toward the end with a handful of snoozy acoustic shuffles and a wack-ass impersonation of the Doors. But mostly, it clicks. Maybe wild boars can be broken.

The Flaming Lips – Doing The Dark Side Of The Moon [2009]

The Flaming Lips will release their version of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon digitally starting December 22nd. The Lips’ Dark Side will be an iTunes exclusive for one week until December 29th, at which point it’ll head over to the other digital retailers. As you probably guessed from the rerecording’s epically long title, both Henry Rollins and Peaches contribute “vocal assistance,” or those talking-head bits that served as segues between songs on the original TDSOTM.

Sting - If on a Winter’s Night (2009)

If on a Winter's Night presents an arc of songs that conjure the season of spirits, the eerie silences of the snow; days of solitude and reflection for some, a time of re-birth and celebration for many. With traditional music of the British Isles as their starting point, Sting and his guest musicians draw the listener in through a collection of songs, carols, and lullabies spanning the centuries - such as The Snow it Melts the Soonest (traditional Newcastle ballad), Soul Cake (traditional English "begging" song) Gabriel's Message (14th century carol), as well as two of Sting's own compositions - Lullaby for an Anxious Child and The Hounds of Winter. Also featured on the album is Hurdy Gurdy Man - a musical reworking and English translation (by Sting) of Der Leiermann from Schubert's classic winter song-cycle Winterreise. For this exploration of the themes and emotions of winter Sting is joined by friend and long time colleague, guitarist Dominic Miller - and an ensemble of three remarkable musicians from Northern England and Scotland: Kathryn Tickell (fiddle and Northumbrian pipes) Julian Sutton (melodian) and Mary MacMaster (metal string Scottish harp). Additional guest artists include Vincent Ségal (cello), Daniel Hope (violin), Chris Botti (trumpet), Ibrahim Maalouf (trumpet), Stile Antico (vocal ensemble), Cyro Baptista (percussion), Bijan Chemirani (percussion) and the Webb Sisters (vocals). Together they've created an album with a wonderful, warm, and unique ensemble sound - an acoustic meditation on winter.

Elizabeth Fraser [Cocteau Twins] - Moses (2009 EP)

The Cocteau Twins' Elizabeth Fraser was once described by a British critic as having the voice of God.

It seems like a long, long time since former Cocteau Twin Elizabeth Fraser made her presence felt as a solo artist, but with this new single it seems all that might be about to change. 'Moses' is something of an enigma - could this be a track from the yet-to-materialise solo album due a couple of years back, or is it an entirely fresh start? The track's soundscape is no less mysterious than its origins, setting swirling, archaic sounding choral samples amid dub rhythms and Eastern European accordion melodies while Fraser's voice sails across the mix in unearthly fashion in a language unbeknownst to this correspondent. Thighpaulsandra offer a sympathetic electronic reworking while Spaceland cast a gloomy, more organic production.

Sade - Soldier Of Love (2010 single)

The queen of smooth soul ,Sade is set to release her long awaited sixth studio album on Feb. 8, 2010 worldwide on Epic Records. Soldier Of Love is the first single from her album of the same name. Generally, it’s damn near perfection, she never disappoints!

Guided By Voices - Suitcase 3

Up We Go Now is the third in the Suitcase series of unreleased Robert Pollard / Guided By Voices tracks excavated from a suitcase of cassettes in his closet. Like the previous two volumes, Suitcase 3 includes about 100 songs on four compact discs in a box. Disc 4 is an acoustic jam session by Pollard, Tobin Sprout, and Greg Demos in 1994-1995 (the period between GBV classics Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes).

Depeche Mode - Fragile Tension / Hole to Feed

"Fragile Tension"/"Hole to Feed" is to be Depeche Mode's third single from their most recent studio album, Sounds of the Universe, their 48th UK single overall, and their third double A-side single, following "Blasphemous Rumours / Somebody" and "John the Revelator / Lilian". "Hole to Feed" is the second Depeche Mode single written by Dave Gahan along with co-writers Christian Eigner and Andrew Phillpott, succeeding the first being "Suffer Well", from their previous album Playing The Angel. Gahan told The Guardian that "Hole to Feed" is, "a very cynical song about wanting to fill a gaping hole but not knowing what to fill it with. About sometimes the idea of having a hole to feed all being a figment of my imagination when I'm actually fine." It was announced on their website on November 7, 2009, and is planned for release on December 7, 2009. Unlike the other two singles from the album, there are no plans to release a 7" vinyl edition at this time, and there will not be a limited edition CD ("LCD") either.
