Public Image Ltd - First Issue (1978)

Like it or not, Public Image Limited's First Issue (aka Public Image) was an album that helped set the pace for what eventually became known as post-punk. In England a vacuum had opened up in the wake of the breakup of the Sex Pistols in January 1978, and many punk fans and rival groups were impatient to see what ex-Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon aka "Johnny Rotten" was going to roll out next. Disheartened owing to events in his legal proceedings against the Sex Pistols management company Glitterbest, and disgusted by the punk scene in general, Lydon was determined to create something that was neither punk nor even really rock as it was known in 1978.

Working with ex-Clash guitarist Keith Levene, first-time bassist Jah Wobble, and Canadian drummer Jim Walker, Public Image Limited produced an album that represented the punk sound after it had shot itself in the head and became another entity entirely. Embracing elements of dub, progressive rock, noise, and atonality and driven by Lydon's lyrical egoism and predilection towards doom, death, and horror, First Issue was among a select few 1978 albums that had something lasting to say about the future of rock music. And not everyone in 1978 wanted to hear it; contemporary critical notices for First Issue were almost uniformly negative in the extreme.

Jenny Lewis - Acid Tongue (2008)

Femme fatale Jenny Lewis has never sounded so passionate and her songs never so hard-hitting and acerbic as on her aptly titled solo disk Acid Tongue. The album follows 2006’s Rabbit Fur Coat (which Spin named among the best albums of that year) and a series of acclaimed albums with indie rock fave Rilo Kiley. Featuring collaborations with A Band Called She & Him and guest appearances by Elvis Costello and Chris Robinson, of The Black Crowes, Acid Tongue proves to be wicked good.

Jenny Lewis will release a solo album Acid Tongue on Warner Bros Records in September. This is the follow-up to her internationally acclaimed 2006 album Rabbit Fur Coat (Team Love Records). The album announcement comes just weeks after Jenny wrapped a world wide tour in support of Rilo Kiley’s Under The Blacklight album (Warner Bros Records, 2007).

The result of the collaboration is a piano based ballad, that I could see Alex Kapranos bursting into in a Franz Ferdinand show. The song begins very soft spoken before breaking into frantoic chorus featuring the track's title. Alex Kapranos can be heard during this part proviiding backing vocals. Camera Obscura - My Maudlin Career (2009)

Scottish twee-poppers Camera Obscura are back! Their last album, Let’s Get Out Of This Country (2006), took them out of the shadows and to long-deserved new heights.
It’s almost as if Spring is already here, as listening to anything from this group is almost like having a little bit of sunshine in the palm of your hand. Tracyanne Campbell’s sweet, saccharine vocals are always a treat to hear.

KRAFTWERK - Trans Europe Express (2009)

Trans-Europe Express (German: Trans Europa Express) is the sixth studio album by German electronic music band Kraftwerk. Recorded in mid-1976 in Düsseldorf, Germany, the album was released in May 1977 on Kling Klang Records. The album's themes were thematically influenced by friends who suggested writing songs about the Trans-Europe Express to reflect Kraftwerk's electronic music style. Critics have described the album as having two specific themes: celebration of Europe and the disparities between reality and image. Musically, the songs on this album differ from the group's earlier Krautrock style with a focus on electronic mechanized rhythms, minimalism, and occasional manipulated vocals.
