Norah Jones - The Fall (2009)

Jones' official website has stated that she "has taken a new direction on the The Fall, experimenting with different sounds and a new set of collaborators, including Jacquire King, a noted producer and engineer who has worked with Kings of Leon, Tom Waits, and Modest Mouse among others. Jones enlisted several songwriting collaborators, including Ryan Adams and Okkervil River’s Will Sheff, as well as her frequent partner Jesse Harris. King also helped Jones put together a new group of musicians to perform on the album, including drummers Joey Waronker (Beck, R.E.M.) and James Gadson (Bill Withers), keyboardist James Poyser (Erykah Badu, Al Green), and guitarists Marc Ribot (Tom Waits, Elvis Costello), Smokey Hormel (Johnny Cash, Joe Strummer)", Lyle Workman, (Bourgois Tagg, film composer for Superbad), and Peter Atanasoff (Rickie Lee Jones, Tito and Tarantula). Jones has also revealed the cover artwork for the album, which features a portrait by photographer Autumn de Wilde.[11]

Kasabian - The West Rider Pauper Lunatic Asylum (2009)

"Vlad the Impaler" was made available as a free download from the official website from 31st March to 3rd April 2009. The first proper, physical release from the album was "Fire", which was released on the 1st of June.

Sergio Pizzorno has called the 52-minute album "the soundtrack to an imaginary movie."

Opening with the track "Underdog", the album also includes a duet, on the track "West Ryder Silver Bullet", with the actress Rosario Dawson.

The album cover depicts the band "getting dressed up for a party at the asylum, looking in the mirror at the costumes". Inspiration for such cover originated from the artwork of Amon Düül II's album Made In Germany.

The album entered the UK Album Chart at #1, giving the band their second #1 album. It remained at the top of the charts for several weeks, only knocked off by the sharp increase in sales of Michael Jackson albums following his death.

The album was nominated for the 2009 Mercury Prize. In October 2009 it was voted the best album of the year by Q Magazine.

The Cranberries - Bury The Hatchet

Bury the Hatchet was the fourth album by The Cranberries, released in 1999. All lyrics by Dolores O'Riordan, and all music by Noel Hogan and Dolores O'Riordan except tracks 3, 8, 10 and 13 by Dolores O'Riordan. In the US, the album has sold 377,000 copies as of April 2007.

It's the first album released by the band after their (first) hiatus which started back in 1996. Dolores had taken that time to heal from stress-induced diseases, and also had her first child, Taylor, during this period. This last fact reflected on some of the tracks in the album, mainly on "Animal Instinct" and "You and Me".

The sound of the band had matured. It wasn't the melancholic and nostalgic feel of their first two albums, and it steered far apart of the anger shown in To the Faithful Departed. The themes of the songs vary, from maternity and children, to divorce and child abuse.

"Promises", the first single, talked about divorce, a theme that was bugging Dolores, who had time to rest in her home country, Ireland. She said she wrote it when divorce was becoming particularly popular there. She was of course fearful for her own marriage, not because she had any troubles with her husband Don, but because now she had to have something else in mind: her son.

New Album: Tori Amos - Midwinter Graces (2009)

Tori's last album, Abnormally Attracted to Sin, was only released in May of this year, so another album in 2009 proves that Tori is only becoming more prodigious as she gets older. Midwinter Graces will be what the Americans call a 'holiday album', i.e. full of old Christmas tunes no one wants to hear their favourite artist singing.

Tori however has always completely reinterpreted the songs she chooses to cover (Strange Little Girls is a case in point) and along with Little Drummer Boy and Have Yourself A Merry Christmas, she is no stranger to the seasonal song. What is interesting to me is that it will feature new compositions - 'Pink and Glitter' and 'Our New Year', but also the press release intimates that this album would be a follow-up to Abnormally Attracted to Sin, which implies to me there may be some thematic overlap here.

Anyway, I say two albums from Tori Amos makes 2009 a bumper year, and I look forward to that first glass of mulled wine and a mince pie to truly enjoy it.
