The follow-up to 2004's acclaimed Milk Man finds Deerhoof traversing slightly more accessible territory than on its past outings. Given the San Francisco-based noise-pop band's penchant for fractured, fragmented chaos, however, The Runners Four is still a challenging and strangely fascinating album. Jarring prog-rock mixes with sunny melodies (courtesy of helium-voiced singer/bassist Satomi Matsuzaki), and the group follows a winding, jagged path that could seemingly veer down almost any stylistic byway in an instant.
